First thought about doing the walk in memory of my Dad, Gordon, half way through our first epic journey on the Fraser Island Great Walk. Seems a bit silly to walk 80km straight but for me it symbolises what Dad and others go through every day.

As the oldest of the original FI great walkers, I vowed  never again to put myself through the physical trauma.  However I lost my Dad to cancer 3 years ago and when I learned that the date for this Cancer Council walk coincides with my Dad’s birthday, it looked like I was destined for a return bout with the Island.  Despite my misgivings, I’m keen to complete the walk and have roped in other friends around my age (I don’t want to be shown up again).

Although I don’t like the term “middle aged” I guess at age 49 that is only a short 10-15 years away (I said years, not minutes).  What a great opportunity for a bunch of us to band together and  put ourselves to this challenge for the benefit of others.  As a father and businessman I have little time to volunteer my services elsewhere, so devoting a weekend to this cause is a good chance to balance the scales.

Hi, I’m Nicole, I am not nomally an active person, usually I am the one who sits back and watches others.  When I was first asked to join the FIC, I thought it was a joke, as I am not the fitest person around.  To set this type of goal was not something I am used to, as it seemed so unobtainable.  I was astounded at peoples confidence that I could complete the challenge, so after a lot of thinking, I comitted and am now a member of the FIC team.  I have started training and I must admit I am hooked on exercise and gym, but don’t let too many people know that!  My children have even started exercising with me, so this has been a major achievement and already has started to change my life.

At 47, Gavin is the supreme example of an athlete who has yet to identify a sport or activity for which he has any particular talent.  He has experienced modest success at fishing however, prefers “catch and release” as he would like his sons to experience the same thrills that he has.

While this is his first opportunity to test his long distance walking skills, he has participated in several “Bridge to Brisbane” runs over the years and regularly forgoes the evening commute in traffic in favour of walking or jogging home from work.  Gavin is a long-time resident of Brisbane.  The photo shows him engaged in his favourite pastime…sitting around!.

Motivation for doing the challenge - Have lost 20kg this year and enjoy new challenges particulary fitness challenges. Supporting charities has to go in there somewhere as well, and I guess finally, I was drunk when Kephren asked me if I would be interested in doing/sponsoring the event.

Just a fat guy trying to get thin. Doing it to raise money so someone else might not have to go through the pain, sadness and heartbreak of the cancer nightmare!

Challenge is my middle name: An experienced campaigner when it comes to putting myself through pain. Having finished the enjoyable, yet torturous, ‘Kokoda Challenge’, conquered the ‘Great Pyramid Race’ & ‘King of the Mountain’, and lost to the men in ‘Battle of the Sexes’. Silly enough to compete & complete “Cairns Ironman Series” & a current member of the Queensland State Touch Football Team……………Walking Fraser with friends, whilst raising $$$$ for the Cancer Council sounds great, as my mother, father in-law & and best friend all have had cancer. Plus the after party on Sunday night sounds FAB !  BRING IT ON

The other fat guy trying to get thin. My mum was diagnosed Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia  4 years ago and continues her journey with this condition she also went through surgery and treatment for breast cancer two years ago. As a school counsellor, I see the painful journey’s many families experience with cancer.  The Cancer Council provides such a wonderful support service to Queenslanders. Time to act and give something back.
